Marsbound by Joe Haldeman

Marsbound
Joe Haldeman
Ace
August 5, 2008
ISBN# 978-0-441-01595-5

From the Publisher’s site:
Young Carmen Dula and her family are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime—they’re going to Mars.Once on the Red Planet, however, Carmen realizes things are not so different from Earth. There are chores to do, lessons to learn, and oppressive authority figures to rebel against. And when she ventures out into the bleak Mars landscape alone one night, a simple accident leads her to the edge of death until she is saved by an angel—an angel with too many arms and legs, a head that looks like a potato gone bad, and a message for the newly arrived human inhabitants of Mars:We were here first.

My thoughts:
Carmen Dula isn’t so pleased about her family being chosen from the lottery for a trip to Mars. Six years is a long time away from Earth. With her last hours on Earth, Carmen finds herself sitting on a sandy beach when a man, older than her, appears and introduces himself as Paul Collins, their pilot to Mars.

For the first two weeks they’ll be stuck in the Space Elevator with a few dozen strangers. There’s only one stop before they reach the top where the spaceship waits to take them the remaining five and a half months journey to Mars. Six months is a long time to travel, and for Carmen, an interest in the captain will help pass the time.

It’s not long after arrival that the daily grind begins to wear thin and Carmen manages to make an enemy of Dargo Solingen, the general administrator on Mars. Looking for some time alone, Carmen suits up and heads outside on the planet’s surface for a walk. What follows is the introduction to other intelligent life on Mars and quick changes in Carmen’s life. Her world is turned upside down when she meets Red, the leader of the alien colony on Mars, and she finds herself settling into a new job as the liaison between Earth and the aliens.

Marsbound is set in a future where technology to travel to Mars has been utilized, and members of a research project have begun living there. Carmen is a typical teen starting out on an adventure that she’s been forced to endure, but by the end of the story she’s matured through extraordinary life experience. Mr. Haldeman pens an entertaining and often humorous futuristic tale where tension and conflict abound, the mysteries of an alien race begin to unfold, and romance finds a way to thrive. The protagonist, Carmen, is the most well-defined character throughout Marsbound, and most of the action, adventure and drama revolves around her. While the aliens are a large part of the story, they’re described in a fairly simplistic fashion that works well in leaving the reader open to focus on Carmen and her journey. The author has done a wonderful job in mixing in humor to keep things lighter, and as a whole it forms a very enjoyable read.

-
COUNTDOWN
-
My thoughts:
When Kira Jordan wakes, it’s to find herself handcuffed to a wall in the dark with no recollection of where she is or how she ended up there. The small-time thief is soon surprised to find that she hasn’t been left there alone, and the man she’s been stuck with is in worse shape than she is.

Rogan Ellis was an inmate serving a multiple life sentence for murder and rape when he’s forced into Countdown, a game that will either save him or leave him dead. If he and Kira can make it through the final level they’ll have a fresh future, freedom he thought he’d never see again.

Their first step is to get free of their restraints, but in order to do that one will have to trust the other to trade a key. They must stay together and work as a team to survive carrying out their instructions to each level, because their host has added a nasty little surprise for them if they try to separate. As the game progresses, Kira begins to suspect that Rogan knows much more about the game than he’s let on, and she intends to get some answers.

A new release in the SHOMI line, Countdown is a familiar concept with qualities that are fresh and unique. As Kira comes to accept her role in the deadly game she plays, her connection to Rogan continues to grow and confuse her. For Rogan, his past his twisted past weighs heavily on his mind, but a glimmer of hope and his determination to control his own future will get him through. Ms. Maddox molds a world where advanced technology can easily help or hurt those exposed to it. The story moves at a quick pace with danger around every turn. The characters are well defined and believable in their quest. The mixture of sarcastic humor and chemistry between the main characters will draw the reader deeper into the story, and the suspense of what the next level may hold will keep you at the edge of your seat. Countdown is an action packed taste of future possibilities.

Hidden by Eve Kenin

Hidden
Eve Kenin
Shomi – Dorchester
July 2008
ISBN# 978-0-505-52761-5

It’s the year 2093 and Tatiana is searching the Northern Waste for Tolliver, the man she believes responsible for the creation of a deadly plague. Having been held captive and genetically altered was a nightmare for her, but she was learning that the changes she’d under-gone enabled her to survive what others would not. She could withstand the bitter cold temperatures without heavy protection, read most people’s thoughts, and quickly heal her wounds. The strength Tatiana had gained, allowed her to stand against most any enemy.

Tristan is a man whose life holds secrets that not even he can fully explain. When he sees Tatiana for the first time he’s drawn to her. It’s not until they meet again that things change and Tristan has no choice but to bring her back to their compound for her own sake and for those living in the Northern Waste. As a team they may be able to finally set things straight and make their world just a little bit safer.

In this second visit to the Northern Waste, a young woman searches for a man she believes is a monster and discovers something entirely different. Ms. Kenin gives readers a tale that’s easily as solid as its predecessor. With equal parts action and romance, this well-defined futuristic world is an easy one to get lost in. While the temperature may be freezing, the inhabitants produce plenty of heat between them to singe the pages. Hidden can be read as a stand-alone, but the characters and their surroundings will have a stronger impact if Driven is read first.

Goetia - Hellgate: London by Mel Odom

Goetia
Hellgate: London, Book 2
Mel Odom
Pocket Star Books
February 26, 2008
ISBN# 978-1-4165-2580-6

It’s been four years since the Hellgate was opened and Demons began taking over Earth and every living thing upon it. The majority of humans are being killed off; those who survive are in hiding or have been altered and used for the demon’s purposes. The landscape is destroyed and reformed to meet the demon’s needs and desires.

Simon Cross is a Templar who once tried to turn his back on the order. Now, in the midst of chaos, he and his team strive to rescue and save the survivors living in small pockets throughout London.

Leah Creasey, who works with someone unknown to Simon, has come to him with information about a linguistics professor, Macomber, who has knowledge the Templar need. He may know the location of Goetia, a manuscript written by King Solomon. It’s said that the power in the book was used to bind seventy-two demons and that skill would be valuable in their current situation.

Warren Schimmer was nearly killed by a demon, but in the end he found himself alive and bound to the demon, Merihim. Merihim has a thirst for power and he plans to use Warren to achieve it. They’ve recovered a book with power of its own, and it’s more than happy to help Warren develop his own power to one day free himself from Merihim.

The search for Goetia is on, and those who uncover it first may end up with power to change the odds in the battle against demons. Finding it is only the first step.

Goetia is the second installment in the Hellgate: London Trilogy and is based on a video game from Flagship Studios. Having not read the first book I had expected to have a little difficulty understanding what was going on, but that wasn’t the case at all. Mel Odom introduces characters into the storyline with good detail of who they are, what they’re after, and whose side they’re on. The only real enigma is Leah. While she aligns herself with Simon, she’s also answering to another group, and refuses to share those details with him. This is not a fast read, there’s a lot to take in as the story progresses. Goetia is action-packed and set in an enjoyable futuristic world that I’d be happy to visit again.
